The Magna Carta was one of, if not the first, government document that implied that the law applied to everyone including the king. Before that, most rulers were considered to be divine, god-like, or chosen by gods. This document put everyone at a relatively equal level legally, so the king couldn’t get away with doing whatever he wanted.
